Hi there! Have you read my book Not so Close, the first in the Luna and Friends series? If you have, you might have noticed that it’s dedicated to a little girl named Sienna. Well, let me let you in on a secret...I’m the real star of the show! But I have to admit, Sienna played a huge part in inspiring the stories you’ll find in Luna & Friends.
In this post, I’m going to share why.
The Background of Sienna and Me
Sienna is a little older than me, but not by much. When we first went on holiday together with our humans, we were both still figuring out the world. I didn’t quite understand children back then, and Sienna didn’t know how to behave around dogs. We were speaking two completely different languages!
I remember the first time I saw her. She was a bit nervous and would run away every time I got close. I didn’t know why, but I was curious. I would chase after her, but not because I wanted to scare her. I just wanted to play! But all the running and squealing made me nervous too, and I ended up hiding sometimes. That was my way of saying, “Hey, I need a little space here.”
Our Journey from Confusion to Friendship

Back then, every time I chased after Sienna, she thought I was trying to hurt her, when really, I just wanted to join in on the fun. Sienna didn’t understand that when I got quiet and hid away, it wasn’t because I was lonely, it was because I wanted to get away from all the noise and excitement. And sometimes, when I barked, it wasn’t because I was being naughty. I was just scared of something, like a strange noise, or sometimes I barked to get her attention if I was feeling a bit ignored!
Looking back now, it’s funny how much things have changed. Sienna and I are the best of friends. She understands that when I get scared or nervous, I just need some space and quiet to feel safe again. Sienna has also learned to be much calmer around me, and that helps me stay relaxed too. Now, I don’t need to hide as much, and I feel a lot more comfortable around her.
How Our Story Sparked Not so Close
It was this journey, from confusion to friendship, that inspired Not so Close. I wanted to help other children understand dogs like me, just like Sienna learned to with the help of our humans. This book is our way of sharing those important lessons, so kids can feel more confident and safe around dogs, and dogs like me can feel more understood.
But remember, dogs are all so different! Not all of us act the same, and that’s okay. Not so Close is just the beginning. Each dog has their own personality, and there’s no one-size-fits-all rule when it comes to understanding us. That’s why I’m excited to share more stories in the Luna & Friends series, so kids can learn about dogs like me, and maybe even some other animals too!
A Quick Tip for Parents and Kids
Through these stories, I hope to help children understand dogs, just like Sienna did. But every dog is different!
Here’s a quick tip: Before approaching any dog, always ask an adult for permission, especially if the dog seems nervous or shy. And remember, with a little patience and understanding, you can help dogs feel more comfortable around you, just like Sienna helped me!
What’s Next for Luna and Friends?
Our adventures don’t stop here! In the next book, I’ll be sharing more tips for interacting with dogs, and in the future, I’ll be introducing you to more of my animal friends, not just dogs! They all have unique stories, and each one has their own special way of showing how they feel. So, stay tuned, there’s lots more to come in the Luna & Friends series!
